Terms of Use

These terms cover your use of the Plato iPhone app and the plato.recipes website. Please read them together with our Privacy Policy.

Agreeing to these terms

By downloading or using Plato, or using plato.recipes, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Plato. “Plato”, “we” and “us” mean the publisher of Plato, and “you” means you. Some features may come with additional terms, which we’ll show you before you use them.

Who can use Plato

You must be at least 13 years old to use Plato. If you’re under the age of majority where you live, you need permission from a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms for you.

Your license to use Plato

Plato is licensed to you, not sold. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to use the app on Apple devices you own or control, as the App Store’s Usage Rules allow, and to use its recipes for your own personal, non-commercial cooking. You may not copy, sell, rent, redistribute or publish Plato or its recipes, or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it.

If you got Plato from the App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the “Standard EULA”) also applies. These terms add to the Standard EULA. If the two conflict, the Standard EULA governs your license to use the app.

Accounts

You can use Plato without an account. If you create one, with Sign in with Apple or your email address, keep your sign-in details secure and give us accurate information. You’re responsible for what happens in your account. You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Account → Delete Account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts Plato or other people at risk.

Premium recipes and in-app purchases

  • Plato includes free recipes and premium recipes. Premium recipes are sold individually or in collections as one-time in-app purchases through Apple.
  • Apple processes all payments, and Apple’s terms apply to them. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
  • Purchases are tied to the Apple Account you used, not to a Plato account. Use Restore Purchases in Settings to get them back on another device or after reinstalling.
  • Apple handles refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can’t issue refunds directly.
  • Buying a recipe gives you a license to use it in Plato under these terms. It doesn’t transfer ownership of the recipe.
  • We may correct or improve recipes over time.

Your content

Recipes you write and the journal entries, notes, ratings and photos you add (“your content”) stay yours. You give us only the permission we need to store, sync and show your content to you, and to process it to provide Plato’s features. We don’t publish your content or make it public. Please make sure you have the right to anything you add. When you delete your account, your content is deleted as described in the Privacy Policy.

Acceptable use

Please don’t use Plato to:

  • break the law or infringe anyone’s rights;
  • access other people’s accounts or data, or Plato’s systems, without permission;
  • interfere with or disrupt Plato, for example by overloading it or getting around its security or rate limits;
  • copy, scrape or redistribute Plato’s recipes or other content, or resell access to them;
  • upload malware or anything else harmful;
  • add someone else’s email address to the waitlist without their permission.

Our content

Plato’s recipes, text, images, software and design, and the Plato name and logo, belong to us or our licensors and are protected by law. Some recipes are adapted from historical sources, which are credited in the app. Food images are illustrations, so your dish may look different. These terms don’t give you any rights to our trademarks.

Food safety and your judgment

Plato offers recipes and cooking guidance for general information. You’re in charge of your kitchen:

  • Check every ingredient label for allergens. Recipe tags, dietary labels and substitutions are guides, not guarantees, and Plato can’t tell you whether a recipe is safe for an allergy, intolerance or medical condition.
  • Cook food to safe temperatures and follow food-safety guidance for handling and storing it. Timers are estimates, so always check the doneness cues.
  • Take care with heat, knives and appliances, and supervise children in the kitchen.
  • Results vary with ingredients, equipment and altitude. Use your own judgment.

Plato isn’t medical, nutritional or dietary advice. If you have health concerns, talk to a qualified professional.

Disclaimers

Plato is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We don’t promise that Plato will be uninterrupted, error-free or always available, or that sync will never lose data, so keep an export of anything important. Some places don’t allow these disclaimers, so they may not all apply to you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of Plato. Our total liability for any claim relating to Plato is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Plato in the 12 months before the claim or US$50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Ending these terms

You can stop using Plato at any time and delete your account. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms or if we stop offering Plato. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as our content, disclaimers and limitation of liability, survive.

Apple

These terms are between you and Plato, not Apple. Apple isn’t responsible for Plato or its content, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it, and isn’t responsible for any claims relating to it, including product liability, legal compliance or intellectual property claims. If Plato fails to meet an applicable warranty, you can notify Apple, which may refund the purchase price; Apple has no other warranty obligation for Plato. You must follow any applicable third-party terms, such as your wireless data agreement, when using Plato. You confirm that you’re not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo and aren’t on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we do, we’ll change the effective date at the top, and if the changes are significant we’ll let you know in the app or on this website. If you keep using Plato after the changes take effect, you accept the updated terms.
